Mount, Measure, Pair

Ordered setup: mount the unit, enter the 2110 mm circumference, pair ANT+ sensors, check the first ride.

Step 1 — Mount the unit. Seat the bracket on the stem or bar and click the head unit in until it latches. On a magnet-based unit, place the spoke magnet opposite the fork sensor with a gap of a few millimetres so the reed switch triggers at speed.

Step 2 — Set the wheel size. On any magnet-based unit, open the wheel-circumference menu and enter 2110 mm for a typical 700x25c road tyre (ETRTO 25-622). Skipping or mistyping this entry skews every speed and distance reading by a fixed percentage; GPS units skip this step because speed comes from position.

Step 3 — Pair ANT+ sensors. ANT+ is a low-power wireless sensor protocol developed by Dynastream Innovations, a Canadian company acquired by Garmin in 2006. Open the sensor menu, add each sensor one at a time — cadence, heart rate, power — and confirm its live reading before adding the next. A sensor on a different radio band will not appear in the list.

Step 4 — Check the first ride. Ride a short loop and confirm speed responds to pedalling, cadence shows 60–100 rpm with a steady 80–90 rpm, heart rate reads 120–150 bpm on moderate terrain, and power (if fitted) reads 100–250 W. Note the battery: GPS recording runs roughly 12–20 hours per charge.

Typical failures in order: distance off by a constant ratio means the wheel circumference entry is wrong; speed stuck at 0 means the magnet gap is too wide or the fork sensor battery is flat; a blank cadence or heart-rate field means the sensor is unpaired or on the wrong radio band.

Budget about five minutes for a magnet unit and ten to fifteen for a GPS unit with two or three paired sensors. Re-check the wheel size after any tyre change, since a different tyre width changes the circumference.

  • Mount: bracket on stem or bar, unit clicked in, magnet gap a few mm
  • Set wheel size: enter 2110 mm on magnet-based units
  • Pair: add ANT+ sensors one at a time, confirm each live reading
  • Check: first ride verifies speed, cadence 60–100 rpm, heart rate 120–150 bpm, battery 12–20 h
